We closed the bed and breakfast in mid-March and remain closed until we receive new guidance relaxing the current arrangements, enabling us to safely accept guests again. These are unusual times for all households but for us it has been very strange not having guests arriving, no extra laundry and no cooked breakfasts.

The end of June is traditionally the time for an iconic Norfolk event, the Royal Norfolk Show, which takes place within five miles of Top Barn Bed and Breakfast. The show gives us an opportunity to see and learn more about many of the things that interest us here at Top Barn, so naturally we try and support it and wanted to share our thoughts in this blog.

We have raised rare breed pigs at Top Barn for five years, always three at a time and nearly always the same breed, the Oxford Sandy and Black. After enjoying a spring, summer and autumn of Top Barn hospitality the pigs repay us in late autumn with delicious pork, sausages, bacon and gammon. We sell some of the meat, eat much of it ourselves and hope that it enhances our guest breakfast menu.

There’s so much to enjoy about wine, not just drinking it, which is of course a very satisfying thing to do, but much more besides. You can appreciate the landscape in which in the vines are grown, or the history of the vineyards and growers, experience the harvest or even explore the close links with song and dance. But for us the most satisfying thing is the way wine is so closely linked with delicious local food and produce. The enjoyment of locally produced food and drink is after all, part of our philosophy here at Top Barn.

In our corner of rural Norfolk, June and July are traditionally the months of the fete and the festival. We are very fortunate to have so many events to enjoy. Young and old alike, there is surely something for everyone. Music, art, crafts, homemade produce and an opportunity to relax and enjoy what we hope will be long, glorious sunny days and balmy evenings.

There is a saying about dogs, ‘a Labrador is born half trained, but a Springer Spaniel dies half trained’. Gus and Maisie are Springer Spaniels – they are extremely energetic. They are not well trained and given half a chance will escape from the grounds at Top Barn and run and run and run.

The chickens here at Top Barn are, overall, quite lucky creatures, having free access to about two acres of pasture, a large pond, hedging and a little woodland. They are, in our view, genuinely ‘free range’.

It’s April and yet again the ‘to do’ list at Top Barn is much longer than it should be. The number of jobs we have listed far exceeds the time we have available to complete them. In the last few weeks we were pleased to start two projects that have been high on the list of priorities.

We now have twenty-two apple trees in the orchard, mostly about ten years old. For it was just over ten years now since we discovered the East of England Apples and Orchards Project, a not-for-profit company, working to ensure a future for local orchard fruits and orchards. Soon after we decided that we should join and where better to stock our new orchard?

We love the idea that burning wood in our boiler and woodstove, generating electrical power with our photovoltaic cells and investing in energy efficient domestic appliances and lighting makes a difference.
